JETSCARGO.COM | ZHENGZHOU โ€“ (ANTARA) โ€“ Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Henan Aviation Group Co., Ltd (CHAGC) aimed at enhancing air cargo connectivity and logistics cooperation between Malaysia and China.

According to Zhang Mingchao, Party Secretary and Chairman of the Board of China-Yuzhou Aviation Group, the establishment of the China-Malaysia Aviation Hub Project will serve as a new starting point to strengthen the strategic cooperation between the civil aviation industries of both countries.

The goal is to better serve and integrate into the high-quality development of the โ€œOne Belt, One Roadโ€ (OBOR) initiative, while continuously expanding global air logistics networks.

Strengthening Air Cargo Connectivity

Under the MoU, China Yu Aviation Group and Malaysia Airports Holding Company will leverage their respective advantages by opening and increasing the frequency of international cargo routes between Zhengzhou and Malaysia.

The two parties will also jointly establish two overseas cargo terminals โ€” one in Zhengzhou and the other in Kuala Lumpur โ€” as part of their collaboration.

They plan to gradually improve software, hardware, customs procedures, and other supporting facilities and services at both airports, creating an efficient air logistics corridor that delivers high-quality services in both locations. This initiative is expected to build a robust air cargo market between China and Malaysia.

An overseas cargo terminal refers to a facility built at foreign airports to provide ground operations such as loading and unloading, warehousing, customs clearance, and transit for import and export goods.

By linking air cargo routes through regular flights and integrating โ€œair network + ground network + cargo source network,โ€ the terminal will offer customers safe, efficient, and cost-effective services.

Malaysiaโ€™s Strategic Role in ASEAN Trade

Malaysia is Chinaโ€™s second-largest trading partner and largest source of imports within ASEAN. Strategically located at the heart of ASEANโ€™s emerging markets and high-growth areas, Malaysia has an extensive air route network covering key global markets and RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) regions โ€” giving it a strong foundation for air cargo development.

Malaysiaโ€™s air cargo market remains relatively stable. Its proximity to Singapore provides a unique transshipment advantage, allowing flexible deployment of inbound and outbound cargo under bilateral air rights agreements. This flexibility enables Malaysia to respond efficiently to market demand fluctuations and significantly improve cargo flow efficiency.

Expanding Cargo Routes and Trade Exchange

As part of this cooperation, Zhengzhou Airport will soon launch a durian cargo route from Kuala Lumpur. The route will also serve as a base for importing seafood, flowers, and specialty products from Malaysia, Indonesia, and neighboring regions, supporting economic and trade exchanges between Henan Province and RCEP member countries.

Throughout this year, Zhengzhou Airport has opened and increased frequency on more than 10 new cargo routes, connecting Zhengzhou with Frankfurt, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Mexico City, and several other international destinations.
